Dry skin and dehydrated skin are often confused as the symptoms are usually very similar, if not identical: dull, uneven complexion, feelings of discomfort, tightness, tingling, irritation, and sometimes itching, as well as peeling. However, the biological causes of dry skin and dehydrated skin are very different. Dry skin is a permanent skin type that lacks water and lipids. Dehydrated skin is a state that only lacks water, but not lipids. It can affect all skin types – normal, oily, dry or combination – at any age. It is often a transient condition triggered by specific circumstances such as internal or external triggers that may disrupt the skin's biological water cycle.
