FAQs

Sensitive skin is a condition marked by unpleasant sensations like stinging, tightness, burning, itching, and irritation, even in response to normally harmless stimuli. These sensations may occur without visible skin lesions or alongside redness.1

People mean different things when they refer to sensitive skin. It’s important to choose products based on the symptoms you're experiencing. Here are some different types of sensitive skin, each with specific symptoms and needs:

  • General sensitive skin overreacts to a wide range of internal and external factors, producing unpleasant sensations that may appear intermittently or become permanent, such as tingling, tightness, redness, burning and itching. Water, heat, cold, sweat, certain cosmetics and hygiene products, fabric rubbing, stress and hormonal fluctuations are the most common triggers, but each person is sensitive to different stimuli. BIODERMA’s Defensive range is ideal for strengthening and protecting your skin's natural defenses.
  • Skin prone to redness and rosacea often experiences unexpected, transitory redness, which can become permanent. Tiny blood vessels may become visible. Sudden flushes may be linked to temperature change, alcohol or eating spicy food, but also medication or illness. BIODERMA’s AR+ range is specially formulated to help calm and reduce redness associated with rosacea.
  • Sensitive skin prone to redness and scales is often symptomatic of a specific skin condition such as seborrheic dermatitis. The skin can become inflamed with red spots or patches or yellowish scales, causing considerable discomfort, itching, burning, and impacting quality of life. BIODERMA’s DS+ range can help soothe and treat the discomfort caused by seborrheic dermatitis.

Everyone’s skin is different and will react differently to treatments and skincare products. When it comes to sensitive skin, here are 4 guidelines to follow:

  1. Diagnose: Visit your dermatologist to identify the factors causing your skin to react and receive professional advice, and, if necessary, a course of treatment.
  2. Avoid: Limit exposure to everyday stressors, including cold or sun exposure, and irritating products and cosmetics.
  3. Cleanse: Use a high-tolerance, soothing cleansing product.
  4. Care: Once or twice a day, gently apply an ultra-high-tolerance treatment. Once or twice a week, gently apply an intense moisturizing treatment.

Choose skincare products formulated according to the ecobiology principles with ingredients that respect sensitive skin's ecosystem and preserve its health over time. For example, BIODERMA’s micellar technology is inspired by the skin’s lipids that capture impurities while preserving the skin’s natural protective film. Care products for sensitive skin should contain soothing ingredients like glycyrrhetinic acid, for example. They should also include moisturizing and nourishing ingredients such as glycerin and squalene.

Each of us is different, and so is our skin. It is important to introduce new ingredients gradually. With skincare products tailored for sensitive skin and a consistent routine, you can reduce redness, soothe your skin, and help restore the skin barrier.

  • Start your routine with a cleanser for sensitive skin or a face wash for sensitive skin.
  • Gently massage a few drops of serum for sensitive skin into your face and neck until absorbed.
  • Keep your skin hydrated and reduce discomfort with a soothing moisturizer for sensitive skin.

Many BIODERMA products are prescribed or recommended by dermatologists. Giving you the reassurance that you’ve chosen a skincare product backed by medical experts who understand the skin’s needs. Some BIODERMA products have been developed in consultation with dermatologists specializing in specific skin conditions, such as atopic eczema and redness.
