Acne during adolescence – and as an adult
Generally considered an issue that we wrestle with during adolescence, adults are increasingly also concerned. For people who suffer from acne after 25 years old, it can be either persistent, continuing into adulthood from the teenage years, or late-onset, developing after adolescence. The Dermatological Society of France estimates that 25% of adults are affected, and in particular, women. Whereas teenage acne covers many areas of the face, adult acne is in large part localized on the jawline and chin.
The first signs of aging…
As an adult, another problem also creeps in. Compared to a few years before, adult skin is thinner and more delicate. Skin reacts to chronological aging, UV exposure, pollution and stress. Fine lines and wrinkles start to appear and there may be a loss of radiance. Blemishes are therefore also compounded by the first signs of aging.
It used to be that only one of these problems needed dealing with at a time. Now both need tending to. Acne-prone skin and the first signs of aging together have an impact on make-up selection, quality of life, and even self-confidence.
Key figures
- 50% of patients who have acne as adolescents also have it as adults
- 85% of these patients are women
- 92% of late acne is benign – but still unpleasant
What causes pimples, and aging?
A change in sebum quality is behind acne.
Acne is caused by dyssebhorroea, a change in the quality of sebum, hypersebhorroea, an increase in the quantity of sebum, and hyperkeratinsation, an increase in the number of skin cells.
With dyssebhorroea, sebum’s composition is altered. It becomes oxidized and thickens. Secreted in large quantities – hypersebhorroea – it clogs the sebaceous glands.
At the same time, there is also a large increase, a hyperproliferation, in the sebaceous duct’s keratinocytes, or skin cells. They stick to each other so that it becomes harder for dead cells to shed. The pilosebaceous canal – or hair shaft – becomes blocked, and sebum can’t evacuate.
The result is one we’re all too familiar with: blemishes! They appear in two forms. There can be comedonal acne, consisting of blackheads and whiteheads. Inflammatory acne, more common in adult acne, is made up of pimples, pustules and papules. All leave marks as they heal and can possibly result in scars.
How skin changes as it ages
The aging process affects the different layers of the skin. As we age, there is less keratinocyte renewal, and our epidermis, or the top layer, gradually thins. Our skin becomes drier as the elements that retain water also diminish in quantity. The barrier function changes, leading to a higher amount of transepidermal water loss. There may be early signs of pigmentary irregularities. And the junction between the epidermis and dermis weakens.
In the dermis itself, the number of cells, veins and structural components, such as collagen and elastin, decreases. With this loss of skin tissue and elasticity, fine lines and the occasional wrinkle begin to form.
So when we thought we were done with pimples, they’re still there. And they’re right beside brand new wrinkles. Both impact our well-being. They also force us to multiply the number of products we apply to our skin to address the different issues, adding the risk of irritation to top it all off.

Adult skin is more fragile. Fine lines and wrinkles show the loss of elasticity, as do visible pores. For an adult with acne-prone skin, they must also deal with trying to heal their blemishes and reduce the appearance of marks on their skin. The most common reflex is to treat the symptoms of skin problems and get temporary relief. The better option is to choose products that act on the causes of skin dysfunctions. Addressing the problems at their origin decreases the number of blemishes, residual marks, and dilated pores, as well as wrinkles and fine lines. Skin is lastingly smoothed and radiance returns.

Salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid: active ingredients to protect and preserve skin health and smooth your complexion
Sébium Serum has been formulated as a blend of proven Bioderma technology and three active ingredients, to restore acne-prone skin to lasting health while acting on the first signs of aging:
Two ingredients help with blemishes and marks, salicylic acid and n-acetyl glucosamine. The first is a beta-hydroxy acid with an exfoliating action. It breaks down the cement that holds skin cells together. The build-up of cells around hair follicles loosens and detaches, helping sebum flow freely. As for n-acetyl glucosamine, it’s a biomimetic ingredient. This amino sugar naturally present in the dermis supports the skin cell renewal process. When cells are discarded from the skin’s surface, they are naturally replaced by fresh cells coming from the dermis. Skin renews itself, reducing the appearance of marks left by blemishes.
N-acetyl glucosamine has further actions as well that address the signs of aging. The sugar helps to slow the development of melanin in the skin, preventing dark spots from appearing. It also stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid. As a humectant, hyaluronic acid is essential to skin’s barrier function and overall hydration levels. Hyaluronic acid is also part of collagen production, which keeps skin plump and supple.
