A short night's sleep, excessive stress, a long time scrolling through the phone... And your eyes betray you. The eye contour, a fragile area

The skin around the eyes is a fragile yet highly challenged ecosystem that needs extreme respect & support. Skin is much thinner than the rest of the body, counting around 3 to 5 layers instead of 7 to 10 for the rest of the face. It has no sebaceous glands, so the hydrolipidic film is reduced and the skin is more vulnerable to various aggressions such as pollution, impurities or make-up. Furthermore, this zone is under constant mechanical stress, undergoing 10,000 blinks each day. It is then more delicate than other parts of the skin.

Lifestyle-related factors including lack of sleep, hormonal change, stress, smoking and poor diet are responsible for visible signs of fatigue or ageing. Dark circles, puffiness, fine lines… Thinner skin under the eye undoubtedly contributes to the visual appearance of all these signs. And as the skin is thinner, the impact is all the greater: skin barrier is altered, skin is inflamed.

Why do my eyes look so tired?

Dark circles, puffiness, fine lines... The thinness of the skin around the eyes is responsible for the particularly visible appearance of all the problems that can be encountered in the eye area.

What causes dark circles under eyes?

You've probably noticed that you have dark circles under your eyes when you have slept badly or too little... Dark circles form halos of color around the eyes and give a tired or sad appearance:

  • Blue dark circles can be explained by a slowdown in blood circulation around the eyes, due to tiredness, age, or both! Blood stagnates and being less oxygenated, takes on a blue color that is particularly visible if you have fair skin.
  • Brown dark circles have a pigmentary origin and are due to an overproduction of melanin. They are more common in darker skins.

What causes puffy eyes?

Puffiness may be transitory or permanent, depending on the age.

  • Transitory under-eye puffiness is linked to slowed lymphatic circulation, which causes an accumulation of water around the eyes. It can happen after a poor night's sleep or an excessively salty meal.
  • Permanent puffiness is caused by an accumulation of fat under the eyes. It is exacerbated with age: the natural aging process results in loss of firmness and muscles allowing fat surrounding the eye to move into the lower eyelids, making them puffy.

The good news is that even if you have marked puffy eyes when you wake up in the morning, it can be solved and fade throughout the day with a suitable caffeine eye cream.

What causes under-eye wrinkles and fine lines?

The skin around the eyes is less elastic than the rest of the face, and with age the loss of elasticity is even more noticeable. And as skin becomes thinner and drier, fine lines under eyes are even more marked on this area. Expression lines are linked to repeated facial expressions such as smiling, laughing or frowning.

These include the crow’s feet wrinkles. What's more, as the skin around the eyes is thinner, it is particularly prone to oxidative stress., accelerating the skin aging process.

How can I look less tired?

It may be logical, but the first thing to do to look less tired is to adopt a good sleep routine. A night of 7 to 8 hours is necessary to allow the body and skin to regenerate.

The skin around the eyes is particularly dry, so drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day is recommended to keep the area well hydrated.

It is essential to take care of this fragile area by using expert products that respect sensitive eye contour, from the hygiene stage right through to skincare.

The first essential step is cleansing. Pollution particles tend to lodge in the eye creases and the skin around the eyes needs to be systematically cleansed every evening. But when removing make-up from the eyes, it is necessary to be gentle, and to use products specifically adapted to this fragile area, so as to stop the vicious circle responsible for inflammation, to avoid irritation and reactions.

The second step is to apply a high-tolerance skin care product, specially designed for the eye contour area. An eye cream must be used morning and night. Do not hesitate to put your cream in the fridge if you have puffiness, as the cold optimises the decongesting effect, and to practice a gentle gesture to boost the efficacy of the product.
