What is the difference between micellar water and toner?

Micellar water and toner are both skincare products, but they contain different ingredients and have their own benefits.

Micellar water is a cleanser which helps clean your skin and keep it healthy. It is to apply first in the skin care routine.

On the contrary, toner is known to restore the skin pH and treat skin issues like acne or dryness. It is usually applied after cleansing.

What is Micellar Water?

Micellar water is a cleanser made of micelles that attracts dirt and oil by lifting them off the skin. Micellar water is a gentle cleanser that does not need to be rinsed off. Made of naturally based ingredients, this cleanser is the best option for all skin types. It is a great way to thoroughly remove makeup, oil and dirt on the surface of the skin.

BIODERMA offers a wide range of micellar waters for all skin types that effortlessly cleanses the skin to remove dirt, debris, pollution and makeup.

Sensibio H20 Micellar Water  is one of the different BIODERMA micellar waters especially designed for normal to sensitive skin. It respects and preserves skin balance while effectively removing makeup and gently cleansing the skin from impurities

Micellar water benefits the skin and offers many advantages:

  • It is very effective to remove persistent makeup like waterproof one while keeping the skin hydrated

  • Even if it is very gentle, it offers a deep cleansing and avoid any harsh rubbing

  • Thanks to its natural ingredients and its composition, it is a good ally for any type of skins

  • Simple, quick and convenient it is perfect for everyday use

Micellar water can also have some coins depending on your skin’s needs.

  • Oily skin and acne prone skin need to be rinsed-off after using micellar water to remove the oil contained in the product from the surface of the face.

  • Sometimes if micellar water’s ingredients remain on your skin, it can cause irritation or allergic reaction especially on sensitive skins which is why it is best to rinse-off your skin after using micellar water if you are prone to irritation.

What is Toner?

Face toner needs to be used after cleansing to balance the skin’s pH. They are particularly designed for oily skin prone to acne and dryness. Toner is also used as an anti-ageing. Finally, it helps strengthen the skin barrier with its moisturizing properties.

The pros of toner are:

  • It offers a refreshing feeling on the skin without stripping the natural moisture

  • It helps treat specific skin problems like acne and dehydration

  • It strengthens the skin barrier to make it more resistant to any irritation, dryness and redness

  • It can penetrate deep into the pores to eliminate buildup residues

  • It exists with many different ingredients to address specific skin types: use alcohol-based toner for oily skin or oil-rich toner for dry skin.

The cons of a toner are:

  • It is not suitable for dry skin or sensitive skin if there is alcohol in the ingredients

  • It cannot be used every day on sensitive skin as it may lead to irritation

Can I use both micellar water and a toner for better skincare?

As we have seen throughout this guide, micellar water and toner have different characteristics and they can both benefit your skin. They work differently and are great additions to each other in your skincare routine

Both products are good for any type of skin from oily to sensitive.

Many cleansers are good at removing dust, oil, and impurities from the skin, but they sometimes cannot penetrate deeper into pores to remove stubborn dirt and makeup residue.

That’s where toner steps in thanks to its ingredients that can penetrate deeper into the pores and eliminate buildup residues that cleansers may not be able to grab.

Using micellar water and toner together allows you to have a better cleansing routine.

But always remember to start slowly your new skincare routine and to adjust to your skin needs. Sometimes you will see that both micellar water and toner are great for your skin to look glowing but sometimes, only one will be needed to keep your skin balanced.

We recommend cleaning your face twice a day. First in the morning, to remove excess sebum that has been produced during the night, and then at night before going to bed, to remove all the dirt and impurities that have accumulated during the day.

Both micellar water and toner can then be used twice daily. Always start your skincare routine with micellar water to gently cleanse your skin and end up with toner to restore pH balance and target various skin issues.
